Have you ever thought, “I still have time. I can decide later. A better option will come.”
Hmmm. Let’s talk about making decisions when you should make them.
One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that we have time—so we delay, we procrastinate, and we hold off on making decisions that should be made immediately. What we fail to realize is that there is a time for everything, and some things are naturally easier at certain seasons of life.
Think about it: Growing corn during the rainy season is easy. But try planting it in the dry season, and you’ll find yourself struggling, putting in extra work just to achieve the same result.
A Biblical Perspective on Delayed Decisions
Beyond the well-known passage in Ecclesiastes about time and seasons, there’s a powerful lesson in Songs of Solomon 5:2-7 (KJV).
“I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?
My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.
I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet-smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.”
At first, the woman hesitated. She heard her beloved knocking, but instead of opening the door immediately, she delayed, thinking of convenience—I’ve already washed my feet, I’ve removed my coat…
By the time she finally acted, it was too late. The opportunity had passed.
Although this passage is about love, the principle applies to every aspect of life—business, career, relationships, investments, and even spiritual growth.
What Happens When You Delay Important Decisions?
You don’t just lose opportunities—you sometimes become a victim of circumstances.
In her desperate search to correct her mistake, the woman in Songs of Solomon wandered the streets, only to be found by the watchmen, who mistreated her.
This is how life works—when you hesitate and miss a critical opportunity, you often find yourself struggling unnecessarily, facing challenges that could have been avoided if only you had acted on time.
Opportunities Don’t Wait
From my experience and the stories of many others, one truth stands out: the best opportunities don’t stay on the table for long.
While you sit on a decision, waiting for a “better” option or the “perfect time,” you might wake up to find that the opportunity has passed—and the only thing left is regret. And what’s the price of hesitation?
Time.
And time is the most valuable resource you can never get back. In the end, many people are forced to settle—not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked decisiveness.
Understanding Times & Seasons
Be like the men of Issachar, who had an understanding of the times and knew what Israel should do (1 Chronicles 12:32).
A respected man of God once said:
“The unit of destiny is time.”
If you waste time, you waste destiny. It’s that simple.
The Best Time Is NOW
I’ll leave you with a Chinese proverb:
“The best time to plant a tree was yesterday. The second best time is now.”
So, my dear friend:
- The best time to start that business is now.
- The best time to apply for that degree is now.
- The best time to take that course is now.
- The best time to decide on that relationship or person is now.
Don’t miss out on life’s best because of indecision. Choose now!
